Zvíkov

The royal castle Zvíkov was built on the rock above the junction of Otava and Vltava rivers.

Its history goes back to the 13th century when it was built by the Přemysls Family. For more than 100 years it was a very popular place among Czech kings. It is often called “The King among Czech castles”. Later the owners changed many times and the castle was falling into disrepair. Fortunately it was reconstructed by the Schwarzenberg Family in the 19th century. The dominating feature of the castle is a dwelling tower called Hlizova. The Czech Crown Jewels might have been stored in the so called Crown Hall. In the east wing of the castle is a large exquisite hall with 6 fields of cross vault. In the south wing is the Chapel of St. Wenceslas, one of the most beautiful rooms in the Early Gothic Style.
